The Great Race Discussion Linkspam
For personal reference, and for anyone else who's interested, because we need to be having these conversations, and right now it seems like we might be reaching some sort of long-overdue tipping point, with discussions springing up all over.

Note: I update this irregularly - the most recent rounds of discussion are to be found at the top, as a direct result of my laziness. Exact chronological order cannot be guaranteed.

I'm not at all sure where to put this, so I thought this might be the most useful spot.

I recently discovered the PBS series, Race, the Power of an Illusion - its uneven .... but the third segment, The House We Live In has a really terrific short(ish) segment on housing and redlining in the US after WWII that does a magnificent job (IMO) of telling the history of redlining, and explaining the consequence with regard to accruing generational wealth and advantages, and the sometimes ironic, sometimes tragic interaction of large systems with individual choices.

Its the first thing I've found to show to my almost entirely white students (l live in Northern Minnesota) that makes them think quietly and reflect, rather than get defensive or angry about the meaning of accumulated privilege over time. The bit on citizenship from the same segment is also very powerful, but not as much on topic of what white privilege means in RL terms.

Thank you - I'd guess that consciousness-raising resources are always useful.

Va Google I found a website for the series, with lots of online articles as background reading for the various segments:

http://www.pbs.org/race/000_General/000_00-Home.htm

http://www.newsreel.org, who made the series, also have background resources, including an article on the history of white financial advantage in the US:

http://www.newsreel.org/guides/race/whiteadv.htm

And an online transcript:

http://www.newsreel.org/transcripts/race.htm

The terrifying thing is that I don't even try for completeness. And there are a bunch of things, like IBARW and the Great Cultural Appropriation Debate of DOOM, where I've settled for linking to someone else's roundup.
